Low cost hotel business Travelodge has recruited a CTO with retail experience. James Hellewell brings a long retail heritage to Travelodge having led technology at Jack Wills, Selfridges and Home Retail Group.
Hellewell joins Travelodge from fashion store Jack Wills where he has been for over three years leading a transformation of the digital and in-store technologies during a multi-year programme. Prior to joining Jack Wills in September 2014 Hellewell was Head of IS at the luxury department store retailer Selfridges for a year having joined Selfridges from Home Retail Group, which was the former owner of catalogue retailer Argos and Homebase.
Travelodge said as CTO Hellewell will be responsible for the adoption of new technologies that “enhance the customer experience and drive the business forwards”.
The CTO will report directly to the CEO Peter Gowers and be a member of the organisation’s operating board.
“Hellewell brings extensive experience in driving digital and multi-site technology improvements in fast paced customer environments,” CEO Gowers said in a statement. “His background in retail will be invaluable as we continue our ongoing drive to strengthen our customer service and productivity.”
“With more than a million visits a week to travelodge.co.uk, a booking almost every three seconds and more than 12 million check-ins a year, there is real potential to use innovative technology to drive further growth across the business,” Hellewell said in a statement.
The CTO does have non-retail experience, he has also led technology for the Australian and New Zealand branch offices of private healthcare provider Bupa and consulting experience with Deloitte.
