Royal BAM Group appoint CIO Steven Capper

IMG_3973Dutch civil engineering firm Royal BAM Group has appointed British business technology leader Steven Capper as its new CIO.  Capper began his career with the Bunnik headquartered business on January 1, 2018.

Capper has a strong heritage in civil engineering business technology leadership, having previously held roles with Skanska, which appointed former Norman Foster Partners CIO Barry Smith in 2017, and also with Arup, where new CDO at Clear Channel advertising Richard Cross was also a CIO.

In a statement BAM Group said the appointment of CIO Capper, as well as new Director of ICT Operations Bert van Haarlem is the “further development and professionalisation of ICT at BAM.”

The joint appointment indicates that as CIO Capper will have a highly strategic role, as van Haarlem will take responsibility for daily operations of ICT across the BAM business.  “BAM considers state of the art IT infrastructure as a key focus to align with the Group’s ‘Building the present, creating the future’ 2020 strategy,” which is a digital transformation strategy.

BAM has four “key disciplines” in its ICT operations, the business says. These are IT business partnering, strategy and planning; ICT services and innovation.

BAM is working on some of the most significant civil engineering projects in the UK and globally. Here in the UK BAM is working with the Environment Agency to develop the Humber Flood Scheme in Yorkshire and is working as a partner in a joint venture with Morgan Sindall as a supplier to the Highways Agency to upgrade a number of the UK’s motorways as part of the Highways Agency smart motorway programme.  Royal BAM is also working on a number of major road projects in Germany.

In the Middle East BAM Group has been appointed to develop a new arena at the Yas Arena complex in Abu Dhabi.

capperCapper joined AECOM, which is working on the Thames flood defence project, in March 2014 as CIO for the EMEA region before becoming Global CTO in 2015. The young CIO spent two years as  IT Director for Skanska from 2012 until he joined AECOM in 2014. He began his career with Arup in 1989 and remained with the organisation until joining Skanska.
