Stuart Hughes has joined agriculture and construction machinery makers JCB as Group CIO following the move of Tim Coles, former CIO at the Staffordshire based firm to Premier Farnell, famed as the makers of the Raspberry computing device to encourage kids to code.

Hughes, a former and very proud of it developer, joined in October 2013 to replace Adam Gerrard, the CIO at logistics firm Yodel. Prior to joining the travel and tourism sector Hughes had been at The Hut an online retailer, where he cut his teeth in Agile development. Hughes spent three years with online financial services aggregator

JCB is a unique success story in UK manufacturing producing a wide range of products for highly profitable markets, it makes generators, construction and lifting machines, agricultural vehicles and offers a range of business services to customers of its products.

Tim Coles spent a decade with JCB, the firm well known for its yellow civil engineer tractors, having joined from car makers Volkswagen.

The IT and knowledge workers at the JCB midlands headquarters are surrounded by the organisation’s heritage as rare and historic machines sit centrally in the office block, bright yellow testaments to the role of constant innovation in an organisation’s success.  JCB started out making a tipping trailer, an innovation on previously manually unloaded carriages before going on to invent the backhoe construction tractor, telescopic forklifts and many other innovations.
