CIO Mike Sturrock joins Domestic & General Insurance

_201304227CIOSturrockMike Sturrock has joined major insurance company Domestic & General as CIO following his career at logistics firm DX Group and airline easyJet.

As CIO Sturrock is also responsible for business transformation at the insurance firm, taking the job titles CIO and Director of Business Transformation.

Sturrock joins Domestic & General following six years with Buckinghamshire based DX Group, a high end logistics firm that can trace its roots to the winter of discontent and the postal strikes. Before joining DX Group Sturrock spent nearly four years with the low cost airlines easyJet including a stint as interim CIO.  Sturrock reunited with CIO peers Andy Caddy, Colin Rees and Simon Lamkin earlier this year to describe to CIO and CTO peers the journey of easyJet from startup to Europe’s largest airline in terms of passenger numbers in this title’s CIO podcast. You can hear the Horizon CIO podcast on iTunes here.

Sturrock is part of a small group of CIOs that have successfully traversed a wide range of vertical markets; as well as his careers in logistics and airlines, the CIO has held senior business technology leadership roles at broadcasting giant BSkyB, telecoms firms Three and BT, advertising firm Vivendi Universal Group and professional services business KPMG.

Domestic & General was founded in 1914 and provides insurance and care services for household goods such as freezers, tumble dryers, washing machines, microwave ovens and dishwashers.  Amongst the services it offers are warranty management including call centres, claims handling and repairs. In recent years the organisation has moved into mobile device and camera care as well as heating systems.

With the rise of connected devices Domestic & General will be able to tap into Sturrock’s experience at developing data collection and analytics strategies. During his easyJet career Sturrock pioneered the capture of information to drive business change. “The data we were harvesting off the aircraft meant we knew who was flying the aircraft,” he told the Horizon CIO podcast. “We approached the safety team and we put together a training programme that was tailored for the pilots and it was dealing with things long before it became a safety issue.”

As a keen sailor (he started his career as a skipper) Sturrock is also a board member for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
