CIO jobs update – 2018 a summer of change

Talk to marketeers and sales teams and they’ll tell you that although the summer of 2018 was highly enjoyable, it has created a severe drag on business activity. Clearly the benefits of flexible working are not fully realised when the heat is on and the beach calls potential customers. Talk to the recruitment and search sector and they’ll tell you there is a real lack of available talent, from DevOps experts right up to CIOs and CTOs.

Certainly the level of activity over the summer suggests this to be the case and sectors such as healthcare, retail and professional services continue to recruit new business technology leaders. Activity in the interim sector also continues to be fairly healthy, perhaps more an indicator of distrust in the economy than claims that the entire economy from fast food to major strategy is going to the gig economy.

In retail Mark Phillips has returned to the interim CIO fold having been on the consulting team of the well known Alix Partners for the last two years. Phillips has joined estate agency chain Countrywide plc as an interim CIO. Countrywide is one of the UK’s largest estate agent businesses employing 11,300 staff providing estate agency, lettings, mortgage, auction, surveying and conveyancing as well as corporate property services.

Retail and logistics supplier Metapack hired former Daily Mail CIO Steve Homan as CIO. Homan takes over from David Jack who as the Horizon CIO Network reported has joined data organisation Dunnhumby as CTPO.  This is the second interim role since leaving the media for Homan, he spent two years as interim Digital Transformation Director with loyalty and financial services provider Collinson Group, a role he described on this episode of the Horizon CIO Podcast.

Online retail leaders Yoox Net-a-Porter Group has snapped up the CISO of department store chain Marks & Spencer. Lee Barney has moved to the online firm as Director of Information Security. Barney has been with Marks & Spencer since mid-2015 and he joined the Paddington, London headquartered business from the Home Retail Group, where he was head of information security for a year and a half having joined from pharmaceutical retailer Alliance Boots. Barney’s retail career also includes a short stint with supermarket chain Tesco and he began his career with the London Stock Exchange.

The public sector has seen a number of major leadership changes. Former CIO at the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Trust Tracey Scotter has returned to the UK’s health sector as Digital Lead for integrated care at the Salford Royal Foundation Trust, partnering Scotter with Rachel Dunscombe, Director of Digital at the trust. You can hear how Dunscombe is working with startup and challenging procurement methods on this episode of the Horizon CIO Podcast.

Scotter completed her five year career with the Sheffield Teaching Hospital Trust in August 2017 and has been working with KPMG in Ireland as Director of Digital Health for the last 12 months. Whilst Howard Blackith has become the CIO of Supply Chain Coordination, an executive organisation of the NHS. Blackith joins from the Department of Health where he has been a programme director for close to two years, he joined the public sector from telecommunications, having held senior technology leadership roles with Ericsson.

In academia Stuart Brown has joined the University of Reading as Director of IT having been Director of ICT at the University of London since 2015.

Gavin Stubbs has become the Chief Technology Officer at CDC Group plc, the Commonwealth Development Corporation a government owned financial services provider. Stubbs joins from an eight year career with financial services provider Close Brothers, which he joined from The Carbon Trust.
